The words “Spring Break” often bring up memories of beach trips and similar adventures from college, but there are many more options and destinations to consider. Families can certainly make the trip to beaches for some warm weather, but they could also try something different such as heading to the mountains to ski and make the best of the last winter snow. Here are some of our picks for top spring break ideas:
Beaches
If you live somewhere with a “real” winter, by the time spring break rolls around you’re probably looking to head for warmer weather. A few of the more popular US destinations include Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and South Padre Island, Texas. Another option is Grand Isle in Louisiana. This beach lies along the Gulf of Mexico is often less crowded but still offers a lot to do and is only about two hours from New Orleans, giving you plenty of options to make the most of your trip.
Mountains
If you’ve spent the last few months dealing with cold and snow, this option may not be as appealing, but heading to the mountains can also be a great way to relax. Many ski resorts have great vacation packages, and you can spend your time skiing, snowboarding, and relaxing by the fire or in a hot tub. We suggest getting a group together or go as a family and rent a house – this gives you access to a kitchen and more space to relax than in a hotel room.
Urban Vacation
You can also use your vacation to explore a new city. A good option could be to rent a house or condo and hit up different restaurants, museums, and other local attractions. You can do the big cities like New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, or try a smaller (but just as exciting place) such as Austin, New Orleans, or Nashville. These trips might take a little more planning but can offer variety and a little something for everyone.
Volunteering
This option is a bit nontraditional, spending your spring break doing community service can be rewarding and eye-opening. Many organizations like Break Away or United Way can help you find opportunities for a group or as an individual to spend your break giving back and making a difference. There are many options available ranging from staying in your current city, traveling to another part of the country, or giving back in another country.
However you choose to spend you spring break, there are options for everyone to find ways to relax, enjoy themselves, and even give back to the community.
